Big Explosion Planned For Tappan Zee Bridge

(Tarrytown, NY) -- Drivers should expect delays on the New York State Thruway near the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge this weekend.

There will be closures in the area as crews take down what's left of the old Tappan Zee Bridge. State contractors plan on using explosives for the demolition, which is expected to start at 9:30 a.m.

The Thruway will close for around 45 minutes on the northbound-westbound side at Exit 9 in Tarrytown, Route 119 in Elmsford and at Exit 22 on the Saw Mill Parkway. It will also close on the southbound-eastbound side at Exits 10 and 11 in Nyack. Officials say the noise from the explosion will sound similar to fireworks.
