Rip Van Winkle House Fire

Dozens of residents from the Rip Van Winkle House in Poughkeepsie are being sheltered at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center after a fire Monday forced them from their apartments.

The Building Inspector for the City of Poughkeepsie determined that the building is unsafe at this time. As a result, all residents were required yesterday to vacate the building. The Mid-Hudson Valley chapter of the American Red Cross is operating the temporary shelter at the Civic Center.

Workers are making progress in restoring the utilities that were damaged at the multi-story building on Rinaldi Boulevard, but Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison says it isn’t clear yet when the building will reopen.
